Grief as woman dies while giving birth at Nakuru Hospital over negligence

A young woman has died during childbirth at the Nakuru Level 5 Hospital, sparking outrage and demands for accountability from her grieving family.

Elizabeth Wairimu Njoroge was admitted to the Margaret Kenyatta Mother and Baby Wing of Nakuru County Teaching and Referral Hospital on Friday, April 18, for delivery.

Her mother, Susan Wanjiku Mwangi, said she was on her way to a church in Tabuga in Bahati when Wairimu called her around midday to inform her that she was awaiting surgery in the theatre.

Wanjiku immediately rushed to the hospital and found her daughter prepped and labeled for surgery but still waiting to be taken in.

“She told me there was a queue and nurses were still debating whether to take her in or leave her in the ward,” Wanjiku alleged.

Wairimu remained in high spirits overnight and was still waiting to be taken to the theatre the next day, Saturday, April 19.

However, by midday, communication with her ceased, prompting Wanjiku to rush back to the hospital. She arrived just in time to see her daughter being wheeled into the ICU in critical condition.

“To my horror, I saw her with tape over her eyes and cotton in her mouth. It was a horrifying sight,” she recounted tearfully. The heartbroken woman claimed she was initially blocked from accessing her daughter and was mistreated by staff, who allegedly dismissed her concerns and even laughed amid her anguish.

Wairimu’s husband, Benson Kinyanjui Wanjiru, said she had shown no signs of complications before the surgery.

“She was cheerful the night before. I don’t understand why she stayed in the theatre for over four hours,” he said.

Mary Wanjiru, Kinyanjui’s mother, described her late daughter-in-law as warm and joyful, saying her loss had deeply affected the family.

The family is now calling on investigative agencies to probe what transpired from the time Wairimu was admitted to the theatre to the moment she was declared dead.

“We want Governor Susan Kihika to act. This hospital is becoming a death trap for women. She must take responsibility,” said Wanjiku.

As of the time of publication, the hospital had not issued any official response regarding the incident.
