ODM MP calls out Gen-Z over images of Raila in Pope’s clothes
Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has criticized social media users for sharing edited images of Raila Odinga dressed in Pope’s clothes.
Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, April 22, Passaris said the images are disrespectful to the late Pope, Catholics, and to Raila himself.
“I have seen a lot of people on social media painting a picture that shows they don’t have respect for a man who lived with God and ruled over 2 billion people as a spiritual leader by putting Raila Odinga in Pope’s clothes. I think that is so disrespectful,” she said.
In her plea to the younger generation, Passaris called on Gen-Z to stand for respect and values, especially at a time when the Pope is yet to be buried.
“I want to tell our Gen-Zs out there, those who stand for certain values, do not allow those values to be undermined by those who have no respect. You should have respect for Raila Odinga, the 2 billion Catholics, and the Pope, who has not even been laid to rest,” she added.
Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 in his residence at the Casa Santa Marta within Vatican City.
According to Vatican physician Dr. Andrea Arcangeli, Pope Francis died from a cerebral stroke that led to a coma and irreversible cardiovascular collapse.
Contributing factors included a recent episode of bilateral pneumonia, chronic bronchiectasis, hypertension, and type II diabetes.
The Vatican revealed that Pope Francis requested to be buried at the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major.

According to the Vatican, Pope Francis wrote his last wishes on June 29, 2022, when he sensed that his death was nearing.
In the last testament, he explained that he chose the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major because he entrusted his ministry to Mary, the mother of Jesus.
“I wish my final earthly journey to end precisely in this ancient Marian sanctuary, where I would always stop to pray at the beginning and end of every Apostolic Journey, confidently entrusting my intentions to the Immaculate Mother, and giving thanks for her gentle and maternal care,” the Pope wrote.
Additionally, he instructed that his burial place be simple and without any decorations, also requesting that the word – Franciscus – be inscribed on the tomb.
“The cost of preparing the burial will be covered by a sum provided by a benefactor, which I have arranged to be transferred to the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major. I have given the necessary instructions regarding this to Cardinal Rolandas Makrickas, Extraordinary Commissioner of the Liberian Basilica,” he added.
