IG Kanja responds to reports a top government official is being investigated over Were's Murder
Inspector General of Police (IG) Douglas Kanja has denied reports that a top government official is being investigated in connection with the murder of Kasipul MP Charles Were.
Speaking to the media on Friday, May 9, Kanja stated that the reports were speculations.
He reiterated that the police had already revealed those who were being investigated in a comprehensive report issued on Thursday.
However, should the arrested persons lead police to other people, Kanja added that more arrests would be made.
“Hio mambo ya, kuna mkubwa wa serikali mahali anaweza kuwa… ni porojo tu. Yangu ni ile niliwaambia jana,” he stated. (Loosely translated, to – Those reports that a senior government official is being investigated are speculations. My official report was issued yesterday.)
Police are currently holding close to 10 people as they investigate the murder of the slain MP.

Notably, while ODM leaders have commended the police for the action so far, many have called on the authorities to arrest those who sponsored the murder.
“The police have only arrested the agents; the author of this crime must be brought to book. This is a political assassination,” ODM leader Raila Odinga stated during the funeral.
“Tom Mboya was shot by (Nahashon) Njenga, who talked of a ‘big man’ who was never arrested. This must come to an end.”
