Expressway Contractor Wins Sh9bn Tender to Rehabilitate Old Mombasa Road

Expressway contractor wins Sh9bn tender to rehabilitate lower section of the Expressway-old Mambasa road.

The Chinese firm that built the Nairobi Expressway has been awarded a Sh9 billion contract to renovate the 27-kilometer double-decker road’s lower segment.

China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) has started works on the new project that is being funded by the state.

The company just built the upper deck toll road, which was opened to the public for a trial phase on Saturday.

The expressway connects Mlolongo to Waiyaki Way via the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Mombasa Road (JKIA).

Under the public-private partnership (PPP) model, Kenya began construction of the Sh88 billion double-decker road with private investment from CRBC.

The Chinese firm is expected to earn an estimated Sh106.8 billion profit for the 27 years it will own the expressway.

Transport CS James Macharia said the scope of the work on the old road would involve fixing the draining system, erecting a bus rapid transport system on the road, and fixing pedestrian walkways.

The design also provides the erecting modern lighting system and recarpeting of the old road.

“We are going to enhance the old road, all the way from Mlolongo to Westlands, to make sure that motorists who do not use the expressway also have a more beautified enhanced road,” said Transport Secretary James Macharia during a media tour of the new road on Saturday.

“We are finalizing a contract of Sh9 billion to make sure we beautify the old road. It makes sense to have the contractor who was doing the expressway rehabilitate the old road.”

“Sections of the old road that were damaged by the Chinese contractor during the works on the expressway will be fixed by the contractor at his own bill,” Mr Macharia added.
