KNUT threatens to quit SHA medical scheme, warns of nationwide teachers’ strike
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has threatened to pull out of its agreement with the new Social Health Authority (SHA) medical cover, saying teachers have faced numerous challenges accessing treatment under the scheme.
Speaking during an event to celebrate Aggrey Namisi’s victory as KNUT’s national deputy chairperson for a second term, union officials said they were considering withdrawing from the SHA arrangement, arguing that teachers are struggling to receive medical services.
The union also warned it could call a nationwide teachers’ strike to protest the SHA cover if the government does not address the issues.

The remarks were backed by KNUT Kakamega County treasurer Jacklyne Mulindi, as well as political leaders led by John Wanyama and Isaac Wanjekeche from Bungoma County, who said the SHA scheme has many challenges that are affecting citizens.
However, teachers from western Kenya were urged to unite to secure better representation in the union’s leadership, as they welcomed Namisi’s election as KNUT’s national deputy chairperson.
The call was made by Maurice Chalenga, the KNUT secretary in Vihiga County.
