President Ruto vows action against individuals implicated in Ksh4 billion fuel scandal

President William Ruto has broken his silence on the arrest and subsequent resignation of four top bosses implicated in the Ksh4 billion sub-standard fuel scandal.

The president spoke during a church service in Kilgoris, Narok County, on April 5, where he vowed to take action after 4 individuals, regardless of their standing in the energy sector.

According to William Ruto, the arrests of Mohamed Liban, Principal Secretary for Petroleum, Joe Sang, Managing Director of the Kenya Pipeline Company, and Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria, Director General of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority, are part of his administration’s efforts to curb corruption across key government sectors.

“In 2022, we talked about ending corruption, and many did not believe it.

They thought it was a bluff,” Ruto said. “I want to say here today, we will not talk about corruption. We will do what needs to be done so corruption ends in this country. People thought it was a bluff.

The president also appeared to suggest that some senior officials, including those implicated in the scandal, were attempting to use the crisis in the Middle East to forge a crisis in Kenya for financial gain.

He went on, “These cartels in the energy sector will not be allowed to operate freely. They will not escape accountability. It cannot be that developments in the Middle East are used as an excuse to create artificial problems here at home.”

It is against this backdrop that President Ruto touched on how his administration has somehow dealt with the cartels and brokers who used to frustrate farmers in the coffee and sugar sectors, and with this, the sectors are doing fine.

“We used to have cartels and brokers who used to frustrate us on the issue of fertilisers. We had cartels on the issue of sugar. Those cartels, we sent them home. Today, the sugar sector is doing okay,” stated President Ruto.

He added that it was because of the uncompromising actions of his administration, that led to farmers being paid well today in the coffee and sugar sectors.

“We had cartels in the coffee sector; today, coffee farmers are being paid well because we stopped cartels,” added President Ruto.
