The German Embassy in Nairobi has announced new scholarships for Kenyan graduates seeking further studies.

The announcement made on April 13 involves pursuing Master’s degrees in Sub-Saharan Africa, opening up fully funded opportunities tied to sustainable development and career growth.

The scholarships are offered by the DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst), which stands for German Academic Exchange Service, and are an in-Country/In-Region Scholarship Program that focuses on building local capacity by supporting postgraduate education aligned with Africa’s development priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Under the program, successful applicants will study at selected universities across countries, including Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, South Africa, Malawi, and Burkina Faso, expanding access to quality education within the region.

The available courses cut across key disciplines such as engineering, natural sciences, agricultural sciences, social sciences, and public and environmental health, all aimed at addressing pressing challenges facing African societies today.

At the outset, applicants begin by identifying programs in the DAAD database, filtering by subject, origin, and level, then checking the deadlines, before creating an account on the meindaad portal.

Next, applicants prepare required documents, including a detailed CV in German format, a one to three-page motivation letter outlining goals, certified academic certificates, and relevant language proficiency test results.

They also obtain letters of recommendation from previous professors, ensuring all materials meet specified requirements, are properly certified where necessary, and accurately reflect academic achievements, skills, and future study intentions.

Finally, applicants submit their applications through the DAAD portal, noting that some programs additionally require separate university admission applications, while others integrate admission and scholarship consideration into a single process.

To qualify, applicants must be graduates or postgraduates from Sub-Saharan Africa and hold a first academic degree if applying for a Master’s program at participating institutions.

The program also places strong emphasis on inclusion, encouraging female applicants and individuals from less privileged regions or backgrounds to take up the opportunity and advance their academic journeys.

Successful candidates will receive monthly stipends to cover living expenses, helping ease the financial burdens that often limit access to postgraduate education for many graduates.

In addition to the stipends, the scholarship fully covers tuition fees, allowing selected students to pursue their studies without worrying about the cost of education.

Beneficiaries will also receive annual research allowances, enabling them to conduct impactful academic work that addresses real-life problems in their respective fields.

The programme further provides an opportunity for research stays abroad, although this depends on funding availability and requires a separate successful application by the scholar.

The application is due on April 29, 2026, giving interested Kenyan graduates a limited window to prepare and submit their documents.
