Ruto orders TSC to recruit 1,800 teachers for Northern Kenya

President William Ruto has announced a major affirmative action programme that will see 1,800 teachers deployed to Northern Kenya as part of efforts to address long-standing disparities in education staffing.

Speaking during a Women Empowerment Programme at Mandera Stadium, the President said the initiative is aimed at correcting what he termed a historical imbalance in teacher deployment in the region.

“So, as I have said, as a matter of affirmative action, 1,800 teachers will be hired in northern Kenya to correct the historical imbalance and injustice that happened, where teachers from this region were not there, they were not hired, and as a result, whenever there were issues, teachers from other parts of the country left the children of this northern Kenya in classes without teachers.”

“That is why, as a government, to correct what happened in the past, I have instructed the Teacher Service Commission to hire 1,800 teachers so that beginning next term, in May, all of them will report and make sure the children of this region are taught, just like the children of other parts of Kenya.”

Ruto said the move forms part of broader efforts by the government to transform Northern Kenya through targeted investment and development programmes.

“We are addressing 60 years of neglect of Northern Kenya by accelerating critical infrastructure and initiating government programmes,” he said.

The President outlined ongoing infrastructure interventions, including power expansion projects aimed at improving electricity access in the region.

He said the government is installing new generators, with nine already planned for Mandera County, and is also working with Ethiopia to connect Northern Kenya to the regional electricity grid.

He further noted that irrigation and agriculture remain central to the government’s development strategy for the region.

Through the National Infrastructure Fund, Ruto said Northern Kenya is being prioritised for large-scale irrigation projects, citing the region’s vast land and fertile soils.

On transport infrastructure, the President highlighted ongoing road and airport developments, including the 750-kilometre Isiolo–Mandera road, which he said is already under construction.
