Sacred Heart Girls' Secondary School, Mirithu closed indefinitely

Mirithu Girls Secondary School in Limuru, Kiambu County, has been closed indefinitely after a dormitory fire completely destroyed one of the school dormitories.

The school administration issued a notice to parents in the wake of the incident, urging them to come collect their kids on Thursday. April 30.

According to one parent, the school did not specify when the learners would resume their studies, particularly since one of the key dormitories had been completely razed.

“The school called and told us the school has shut down indefinitely, and we should come and pick up our children,” stated one of the parents.

Parents are now raising concern that the school may ask them to pay additional costs as normal learning resumes, with many saying they do not even have the capacity to pay the second-term fees.

“We are asking the school not to impose extra costs on us, because the school just opened from holidays yesterday, and some of the parents have not even completed paying for this term’s fees,” stated another parent.

They are also demanding that the school conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the dormitory fire, so that their children can be assured of safety and not live in fear of similar incidents in the future.

Further, parents appealed to well-wishers to help rebuild the dormitory, citing financial constraints and expressing concern that their children may fall behind as learning continues in other schools.

“We are asking anyone who can help to please come to our aid. We do not have the money to rebuild the dormitory on our own, and every day that passes is a day our children fall further behind while other schools continue learning,” another parent appealed.

Less than 24 hours later, another school was hit. Dr. Aggrey High School in Taita Taveta County also caught fire, an incident the Kenya Red Cross confirmed.

Photos show a massive fire in a building that appears to be a classroom, with thick smoke billowing into the sky as students and teachers scramble for safety and others try to contain the fire.

The school also reported a massive fire tragedy in 2025, causing it to be closed indefinitely, and all students were sent home after two dormitories were burned in February.
