Former Harambee Stars & Gor Mahia player Allan Thigo dies
The Kenyan football fraternity has been plunged into mourning following the passing of former Harambee Stars and Gor Mahia midfielder Allan Thigo.
Gor Mahia confirmed Thigo’s demise in a statement, with the club revealing the midfielder lost his life after a battle with cancer. He passed away in his native Bungoma County.
“It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of former player and coach Allan Thigo, a figure whose dedication and passion for football were remarkable,” Gor Mahia said in a statement.
The club went on, “His contribution to Kenyan football and Gor Mahia family will always be remembered.”
Fondly referred to as a “90-minute man,” Thigo earned admiration for his relentless energy and consistency throughout his playing career.
He leaves behind a rich legacy as one of the finest midfielders to ever feature in Kenya’s domestic football scene.
During an exemplary 12-year spell at Gor Mahia between 1970 and 1981, Thigo scored 88 goals, making him the club’s second all-time top scorer behind Sammy Onyango, who netted 93.
On the pitch, Thigo was the engine of the Gor Mahia side, known for his ability to dominate the midfield with unmatched stamina.

He covered every inch of the field, seamlessly transitioning between defence and attack, a quality that set him apart from his peers.
As captain, he was famous for being somewhat of a tactician on the pitch, organising teammates, reading the game, and adjusting formations depending on the match situation.
His strength and close ball control allowed him to shield possession effectively, making him difficult for opponents to dispossess.
Thigo played a key role in leading Gor Mahia to the 1976 league title, a historic season in which the team went unbeaten.
He was also part of the squad that competed in the 1979 Africa Cup Winners’ Cup, further cementing his place in the club’s golden generation.
Beyond his playing days, Thigo remained committed to football, serving as chairman of the Kenya Soccer Players Association, where he championed the welfare of both current and retired players.
