Mbooni Girls High School closed over diarrhoea outbreak

Students at Mbooni Girls High School have been temporarily released to return home following reports of a suspected diarrhoea outbreak at the institution, according to the Kenya Red Cross.

The school administration directed parents and guardians to collect their children on Tuesday, May 19, as public health officials continue with investigations and medical assessments to establish the source and extent of the illness.

In a memo sent to parents, the school said several students had complained of stomach-related discomfort, prompting the precautionary closure.

“Dear Parents/Guardians, we would like to inform you that a number of students have reported stomach-related discomfort. As a precautionary measure, and to allow the Public Health Office to carry out a thorough assessment, we kindly request parents to pick their daughters from school tomorrow, Tuesday, May 19, 2026,” part of the memo read.

The administration further assured parents that it is working closely with relevant health authorities to safeguard the well-being of the learners during the ongoing assessments.

“The school management is working closely with the relevant authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of all students. The health and safety of our students remain our top priority and prompt cooperation will help us manage the situation effectively,” the statement added.

Health officials are now expected to carry out inspections and tests within the school as part of efforts to determine whether the illnesses were caused by contaminated food, water, or another health-related factor.
