Government announces Ksh200K compensation package for Utumishi Girls fire victims
Each of the families of the 16 victims who lost their lives in the Utumishi Girls Academy dormitory fire tragedy will receive KSh200,000 in compensation from the government.
In a statement by the government spokesperson, Isaac Mwaura, on Saturday, it was announced that the government will also extend support to the family of the parent who lost her life in a road accident while rushing to the school to know the whereabouts of her daughter.
At the same time, Mwaura announced that the state will cover all medical expenses incurred by over 79 students admitted after the incident.
“The government continues to stand in solidarity with the families and the entire Utumishi Girls Academy community following the tragic fire incident that claimed the lives of 16 students and 1 parent, while leaving several others injured,” Mwaura stated.
“The government is committed to meeting all medical expenses incurred at both hospitals and paying Ksh 200,000 to each bereaved family (including the family of the parent who tragically lost her life while coming to pick her child),” he added.
The government also pledged to cover funeral-related expenses for all victims, including mortuary charges, coffins, transportation of the deceased, and expenses for a requiem mass to be held at Utumishi Girls Academy on a date to be announced.
According to Mwaura, injured students were airlifted from St Joseph Hospital to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for specialised treatment, with the State undertaking to cover all medical bills.

He further dismissed reports suggesting that the government had failed to honour promises made to affected families, insisting that all commitments remain in force and are currently undergoing the necessary administrative and legal processes.
“The National Government, working closely with the County Government, remains fully committed to all the promises made to the affected families, contrary to claims from sections of the media. The government is taking necessary administrative and legal processes towards the fulfilment of these commitments,” Mwaura added.
The latest update comes as families continue to mourn the victims of one of the deadliest school fire incidents in recent years.
The incident happened on May 28 after some students set a dormitory on fire, leading to the fatalities.
The families of the victims have since successfully identified the bodies of their loved ones through a DNA test, while the students accused of orchestrating the attack are in custody as the investigation into the matter intensifies.
