Deaf man in court for stealing laptop, baked beans from MP Karauri's home
A deaf man accused of breaking into the Nairobi residence of Kasarani MP and SportPesa CEO Ronald Karauri has been arraigned before a Milimani Law Courts magistrate.
Jeremy Kamau appeared before Principal Magistrate Paul Mutai to face a burglary charge.
The prosecution told the court that on January 18, 2026, Kamau unlawfully entered Karauri’s home in Westlands Sub-County and made away with an Apple MacBook Air laptop valued at Ksh.100,000, a can of baked beans worth Ksh.250 and a can of energy drink.
According to the prosecution, police officers attached to the MP’s residence, Police Constables Elliot Kemei and Jackson Karioki, were on duty when they heard a commotion coming from the kitchen area of the house.
On checking, P.C. Karioki reportedly found the accused inside the kitchen. The officer ordered Kamau to surrender, but the suspect allegedly lunged toward him, prompting the officer to shoot him in the leg to subdue him.

The officers then conducted a search and recovered the stolen items, the MacBook Air laptop, a can of baked beans and an energy drink, which MP Karauri later confirmed belonged to him.
The injury sustained during the arrest left Kamau hospitalised for more than six months, the court heard.
His fingerprints were subsequently lifted and submitted to the National Registration Bureau for analysis, where he was positively identified as Jeremy Kamau.
During the proceedings, the court noted that the accused is deaf and directed that a qualified sign language interpreter be provided to ensure he fully understood the charges and court process.
Kamau is facing charges of being in possession of stolen property, including the Apple MacBook Air laptop, the can of baked beans and the can of energy drink.
The matter is set for further directions and hearing.
