Azimio Senators walk out of Senate after Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria arrived in the chamber for grilling.

Azimio coalition lawmakers on Wednesday, June 21, staged a walkout of the Senate after Trade CS Moses Kuria was allowed to appear before the House.

The Azimio la Umoja senators were upset during the Senate proceedings after Kuria was permitted to respond to questions on his docket by Speaker of the Senate Amason Kingi.

The senators argued that the lack of a quorum violated Standing Order 41 and prevented the House from conducting business.

The Speaker also objected to Trade CS Kuria being questioned about the scandal involving the edible oil scam and attacks on the media.

This was after Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna filed a censure motion against the CS, following his remarks against the media.

“I have filed a motion at the Senate to discuss Moses Kuria’s conduct because the constitution, which guarantees media freedom, must be upheld. A person in such a capacity should not be allowed to make such remarks which can’t be made even before children,” Sifuna stated.

Speaker Kingi, however, noted that the Senate proceedings would proceed as scheduled with the set questions.

“Having not seen the proposed motion by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, it cannot be a subject of discussion on the floor of the House today.

“Even assuming that the proposed motion was submitted to the Office of the Speaker, it may have not been admissible. So what we are doing is anticipating debates, contrary to Standing Order 99,” Kingi stated.

Minutes after giving the order, the Azimio team, lead by Sifuna, left while yelling at the speaker.

Some of the questions addressed to the CS concerned the kind and volume of commodities imported by businesses that Kenya National Trading Corporation (KNTC) had prequalified.

In reference to this, CS Kuria pointed out that 22 vendors had been given permission to import four different products: fertilizers, rice, beans, cooking oil, and beans.

He added that KNTC went through a rigorous process to find and vet importers of the products.
