Ballon d’Or 2022 Ranking; the topmost favorites – March 2022
The Ballon d’Or is football’s most coveted individual award. It is given to the best performing footballer in a calendar year by the French news magazine France Football.
Only the best players in the game’s history have been able to win home the coveted trophy.
Ballon d’Or winners history
The Ballon d’Or winner is chosen on the basis of a combination of votes from journalists, national team captains and coaches.
Lionel Messi is the player with the most wins in the history of the award. He won his seventh Ballon d’Or last year.
Cristiano Ronaldo is second with five Ballon d’Ors.
The duo have exercised a sort of duopoly over the award over the past decade and more.
Ballon d’Or 2022; the top five favorites to win
5 Lionel Messi (Argentina/Paris Saint-Germain)
At Paris Saint-Germain, Lionel Messi has struggled to get off the ground.
Despite his outstanding performance in the Champions League from the start, La Pulga needed some time to adjust to life in Ligue 1.
Messi, on the other hand, appears to be regaining his form since the turn of the year. In his last ten appearances for PSG, he has been involved in ten goals, scoring three and assisting seven.
In 23 games for PSG this season, he has seven goals and 11 assists in all competitions.
Despite missing 11 league games due to various injuries, Messi now has the most assists in Ligue 1. In 2022, he also has the most assists in Europe’s top five leagues.
4 Karim Benzema (France/Real Madrid)
Karim Benzema, the Real Madrid striker, has been outstanding in Real Madrid’s previous two games in February.
In the Champions League, he was relatively quiet against PSG, although it wasn’t really his fault because he was starved for service in that game.
Benzema scored one goal and assisted on two more as Real Madrid defeated Deportivo Alaves just days after losing to PSG. After that, he scored the game’s only goal as Real Madrid defeated Rayo Vallecano.
This season, Benzema has been performing at a higher level. In just 31 appearances for Real Madrid this season, he has 26 goals and 11 assists in all competitions.
3 Robert Lewandowski (Poland/Bayern Munich)
For several years, Robert Lewandowski has been in incredible goal-scoring form.
Many fans believe Lewandowski should have been awarded the Ballon d’Or in 2021.
Almost everyone agrees that the Polish international, which was canceled that year due to the Covid-19 outbreak, was robbed of the award in 2020.
In February, Lewandowski scored five goals in five games for Bayern Munich. In Europe’s top five leagues, he is the most prolific goalscorer.
The 33-year-old has scored 39 goals and contributed three assists in 33 appearances for Bayern Munich in all competitions.
2 Mohamed Salah (Egypt/Liverpool)
In the 2021-22 season, Mohamed Salah has been one of the most in-form players.
He was disappointed to lose out on the 2021 African Cup of Nations, as Egypt was defeated by Senegal on penalties in the final. Salah, on the other hand, has now won his first trophy of the season.
In February, he helped Liverpool win the League Cup, defeating Chelsea in a penalty shootout.
Salah’s performance has been a major reason in Liverpool’s re-entry into the Premier League title chase this season.
The Egyptian international is a strong contender for the Ballon d’Or this season.
1 Kylian Mbappe (France/Paris Saint-Germain)
Kylian Mbappe has been in sublime form in the 2021-22 season.
Despite all the world-class talent around him at PSG, Mbappe has stood out by a fair margin.
The Frenchman has turned in multiple match-winning performances for his side since the turn of the year.
In 34 appearances across all competitions so far this season, he has scored 24 goals and provided 17 assists.
