Bus full of passangers catches fire along Nairobi-Mombasa road

Twenty passangers rescued after a bus they were travelling on caught fire along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in Makueni County.

According to Eastern Regional Police Commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan, the bus was ferrying 20 passengers when it burst into flames along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway. 

Napeiyan said the passenger service vehicle burst into flames at the Kanga area within Tsavo National Park at 1.00am on Monday, January 22.

The 1.00 am incident was reported to Mtito Andei police station as a vehicle fire incident involving a passenger bus.

“It was reported by other motorists at about 1.00 am that there was a vehicle which was on fire along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway at the Kanga area within Tsavo National Park. 

“Our officers responded and established that motor vehicle registration, a PSV bus was moving from Mombasa direction headed to Nairobi with 20 passengers on board before it got burnt completely after it caught fire from the rear wheel tyre,” Napeiyan said.

The police boss revealed that all the passengers were safely evacuated from the burning bus, with no injuries recorded. 

Luckily, all luggage was also salvaged, with all on board being accounted for, and after evacuation, the passengers were transferred to a rescue bus and continued their journey to Nairobi, where they reached safely. 

The police boss noted that arrangements were immediately made for another bus and all occupants proceeded with their journey to Nairobi by the same bus company.

He said they have launched investigations into the incident to ascertain the real cause of the fire.
