A businessman is counting losses after unknown suspects broke into his car and stole Sh1.8 million moments after he had withdrawn the same from a bank in Kitengel, Kajiado County.

The businessman aged 47 told police he had withdrawn the cash on January 10 and was to use the same for a development project in the Isinya area.

He said after the transaction, he placed the money in his Toyota Harrier car and drove to the Isinya area and later to a popular hotel along Namanga Road for late lunch.

According to police, the victim parked his car at the entrance of the hotel and went in for the meal.

He later walked out of the restaurant to attend to a phone call only to realize the car had been broken into.

He said the car’s window had been broken into and the cash which was in the backseat was missing.

Preliminary inquiries obtained from the CCTV footage captured the occupants of another vehicle, which was also parked at the hotel’s parking yard adjacent to the victim’s motor vehicle breaking the window glass, opening the door and taking away the bag.

The people behind the incident jumped into the car and left with the loot.

Police believe the victim was trailed from the bank to the scene where the breaking and stealing happened.

A team visited the bank as part of the probe into the saga. No arrest or recovery has been made so far, police said.

Police say such incidents happen due to insider information.

Some of the suspects behind the incidents usually stay in banking halls posing as customers while monitoring those transacting.

The police want those who withdraw huge amounts to seek their services.
