Abdi Mohamud has been sworn in as the CEO of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

Mohamud was sworn-in on Monday, January 13, in a ceremony held at the Supreme Court in Nairobi.

The ceremony was presided over by Chief Justice Martha Koome, with the oath of office administered by Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, Winfridah Mokaya.

The event saw attendance from key figures, including EACC Chairperson Bishop David Oginde, Chair of the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) Hon. George Murugara, and the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mohamed Amin.

During the ceremony, Mohamud pledged to uphold diligent leadership, acknowledging the significant responsibilities and expectations placed upon the EACC.

“I am aware of the huge responsibilities and expectations Kenyans bestow upon the EACC. I wish to offer my commitment and fidelity to the oath of office that I subscribed to in combating corruption, economic crimes, and ethical conduct in our country,” he said.

On the other hand, Koome commended Mohamud’s appointment, emphasizing the trust and confidence that Kenyans have in his leadership to combat corruption.

“You will be embracing the trust and the confidence of Kenyans who will be looking up to you with great hope and expectation,” she stated.

Mohamud was appointed as the new CEO of EACC to succeed Twalib Mbarak whose six-year term concluded on January 10, 2025.

Mohamud’s journey to this position reflects a distinguished career in law enforcement and anti-corruption efforts.

He began his career in 1989 as a Cadet Inspector in the Kenya Police Service.

In 2005, he joined the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (now EACC) as a Senior Officer in charge of the Rapid Response Division, eventually rising to become the Director of Investigations.

In December 2016, Mohamud was honored with the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (M.B.S.) for his significant contributions to the fight against corruption.

He holds a Master of Science degree in Security and Risk Management from the University of Leicester, UK, and a Bachelor of Laws degree from Mount Kenya University.

The process leading to his appointment involved a competitive recruitment exercise.

The EACC advertised the CEO position in September 2024, receiving 172 applications by the October deadline.

After shortlisting 14 candidates, interviews were conducted in November 2024 and Mohamud’s nomination was subsequently forwarded to the National Assembly for vetting, where he received approval in December 2024.
