Cristiano Ronaldo’s honest view on whether Lionel Messi settled the GOAT debate
Ronaldo’s honest view on whether Lionel Messi settled the GOAT debate with the World Cup win in Qatar.
Cristiano Ronaldo has given his opinion on whether Lionel Messi’s World Cup triumph will end the debate on who is the greatest of all time.
At his finest on Sunday, Messi helped Argentina defeat the reigning World Cup champions France at the Lusail Stadium to eventually win the tournament.
Despite leading 2-0 at the break, Argentina ultimately found themselves in a tight game as two goals from Kylian Mbappe in the final ten minutes forced extra time.
Messi appeared to have won the game when he scored in the 108th minute, but Mbappe had other ideas, forcing a shootout with a last-second penalty kick of his own in the 118th.
At the end of a dramatic penalty shootout in which France missed two attempts, Messi was unable to be stopped as Argentina won 4-2.
Coming into the World Cup, many felt that if one of Messi or Ronaldo wins the tournament, they will become the undisputed GOAT.
Now, fans are adamant that Messi is untouchable after getting his hands on the elusive World Cup trophy, something that Ronaldo hasn’t been able to do with Portugal.
However, prior to his side’s shock exit in the quarter-finals against Morocco, Ronaldo has already snubbed the idea that his or anyone else’s legacy will be impacted by the World Cup.
When asked whether the 2022 tournament will decide the GOAT debate, Ronaldo said: “Even if I win the World Cup that will continue. Some people like me more, some less. It’s like in life, some like blondes, some like brunettes.
Lionel Messi finally has his hands on the World Cup trophy.
“I have always had to show what I can do year after year. I would love to win this tournament. I’m ambitious but if you tell me I won’t win any more tournaments I would still be happy given all I have won. In the history books, all other records will be there. But obviously, a World Cup on the shelf wouldn’t be bad. It would be a dream.”
Messi has now completed his World Cup journey with a stunning victory right at the end, a fairytale ending for a player that writes his own stories on the pitch.
