Kenya signs bilateral agreements with Jamaica to have Kenyan benefit from exchange programmes (jobs and scholarship opportunities).

Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua announced on June 21 that Kenyans would have access to jobs and scholarships as a result of negotiated bilateral agreements with Jamaica.

Kenyans can now look for work in the Caribbean nation’s health sector and cruise ship business, while exchange programs help students in the tourism industry.

“We agreed on bilateral cooperation in the tourism sector to share knowledge and best practices between Jamaican Maritime University and Kenya’s Bandari College.

“This will include scholarships, student and faculty exchanges, joint development of curricula, internships, and training,” read the statement in part.

CS Mutua divulged details of the bilateral agreements after meeting Jamaica’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Kamina Smith.

As Kenya approaches the over 3 million-person Jamaican market, he also stated that Kenyan farmers in the tea and coffee industries would profit from the new agreement.

He also mentioned Jamaica’s proposal to collaborate with Kenya in the fintech sector.

Other avenues for cooperation included fair international financial systems and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between respective Chambers of Commerce.

“To implement these action areas, we agreed to co-host the inaugural session of the Kenya-Jamaica Joint Commission for Cooperation (JCC) that will be preceded by a high-level visit to Nairobi, Kenya, in October 2023,” read the statement in part.

During the Tuesday meeting, Mutua also rallied Jamaica to support Kenya’s candidature for the position of Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Kenya fronted Ambassador Nancy Karigithu for the position with President William Ruto rooting for her election.

“With experience spanning over 30 years in the maritime sector, Karigithu is an accomplished expert with a proven commitment to the cause of global maritime interests.

“I wish to underscore that Karigithu has all it takes to handle challenges facing the shipping industry,” Ruto vouched for Karigithu in a video posted by the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs in May 2023.
