Gang members will be treated as individuals; IG Kanja warns after All Saints Cathedral attack
Inspector General of Police (IG) Douglas Kanja has fired a stern warning at criminal gangs and goons across the country, making it clear that the National Police Service has no room for thuggery and that anyone caught up in criminal groups will answer for their actions individually, not as part of a collective.
The IG made these remarks on Wednesday while commissioning a new administration block at Kiamumbi Police Station along Kamiti Road.
He also touched on the broader transformation underway within the police service, particularly around digitisation.
“We are keen to ensure we have well trained and motivated officers. Right now, NPS is on the journey of automation. We have a situation whereby you can be able to interact with the police station from the comfort of your home. We must digitise all services offered by NPS, as this will reduce bribery and corruption,” he said.
On the question of accountability for gang members, Kanja was direct in stating that group membership offers no shield from individual consequences.
“When anyone of us decides to join gangs and goons, you will be dealt with as an individual, not as a group of people,” he said.

He also gave an update on the investigation into the recent attack at All Saints Cathedral, disclosing that five suspects have already been taken into custody in connection with the incident.
“Juzi kuna wale walienda kwa kanisa pale. Tumeshika watano. You’re going to see in the coming days more arrests,” he said, hinting that the net is closing in on more suspects.
Addressing young people specifically, Kanja cautioned against the lure of criminal networks, stressing that the path leads only to hardship for both the individual and their family.
“Criminals are criminals whichever side they come from. I want to urge you, please stay away from crime. It will bring you and your families a lot of sufferings when you join goons,” he said.
He revealed that he has put every level of police command on alert and given the Director of Criminal Investigations firm instructions to ensure criminals face the law without exception, regardless of where their loyalties lie.
Kanja reiterated that the long-term vision is to turn police stations into centres of excellence, strengthening the bond between officers and the communities they are meant to protect.
