School bus carrying 59 students overturns on Eldama Ravine-Nakuru Road

More than 50 students have been injured after a school bus they were travelling in got involved in an accident along the Eldama Ravine-Nakuru road on Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred at around 9 am near the Kibasiso area when the bus belonging to Pineview Academy Kiplogon reportedly lost control due to a suspected mechanical failure.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the vehicle’s brakes reportedly failed, causing the driver to lose control before the bus veered off the road and overturned.

At the time of the crash, the bus was ferrying students to Mogotio for the regional music festivals, with reports suggesting that it was carrying about 59 learners from two separate schools.

All 59 students sustained injuries of varying severity, but preliminary reports indicated that none of the injuries was fatal. First responders rushed the learners to hospital for treatment.

The injured learners were taken to various facilities, including Eldama Ravine Sub-County Referral Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Ravine Specialist Hospital, and the Eldama Ravine Nursing Home.

Images of the scene widely circulated on social media showed the bus extensively damaged and lying along the road, even as rescuers intensified efforts to retrieve the victims.

Police officers from Eldama Ravine Police Station have since cordoned off the scene, with investigations underway to establish the exact cause of the morning accident.

The latest incident comes just five days after a similar tragedy in which one person died, and several students were injured when a matatu carrying Ngondi Junior School learners overturned.

The vehicle lost its brakes on Friday, June 13, 2026, before plunging into a valley along Maiella Road, with witnesses claiming that the poor condition of the road also contributed to the accident.

In the accident, the driver of the matatu reportedly died on the spot, leaving 10 learners sustaining various degrees of injuries but were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

The back-to-back accidents have intensified concerns over school transport safety standards amid calls for stricter enforcement of vehicles across the country.
