Disquiet After ODM Hands James Orengo Direct Nomination Ticket For Siaya Gubernatorial Seat

The Orange Democratic Party has issued a direct ticket to Siaya Senator James Orengo for the gubernatorial race.
Mr. Orengo will face off against former Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo, who joined United Democratic Movement (UDM).
MP Oburu Oginga for the East African Legislative Assembly also received a ticket for Siaya senatorial race.
Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi, who dropped out of the Siaya gubernatorial contest, and Rarieda MP Otiende Amolo have also bagged direct nominations.
However, the decision has generated discontent in the party, with hopefuls expressing their displeasure with the party’s choice.

A gubernatorial candidate, George Mugoye, said he had already paid the costs to contest the party nominations. He questioned why they were permitted to pay nomination fees just to have the party send out direct tickets to certain individuals.
As the party’s name suggests, Mugoye has challenged the party to be democratic.
“Why did they allow us to pay nomination fees and campaign throughout Siaya when they knew they would give the ticket to one of us? This is totally unfair The ODM party needs to be democratic just like its name suggests. We were told that the party conducted an opinion poll and settled on the nominees. Where and when did they do that,”said Mugoye in an interview.
