Governor Cecily Mbarire refutes reports alleging that 5 babies died at Embu Level V Hospital after nationwide power blackout

Governor Cecily Mbarire refutes reports alleging that 5 babies died at Embu Level V Hospital after nationwide power blackout.

The nationwide power outage has reportedly left some families mourning their loved ones who were depending on machines for life support.

One such grieving couple is from Embu, who lost their newborn child at the Embu Level V Hospital.

However, Embu governor dismissed the reports terming them misleading but non-factual.

Activist Boniface Mwangi on Saturday shared online screengrabs of messages purportedly from a father who lost a baby at the facility.

“I met other parents at the hospital and we all paying Ksh200 for a burial permit since their infants also passed away yesterday night and today morning,” he revealed.

The father had shared what he claimed was a mobile money payment receipt for a burial permit at the hospital.

According to reports, their newborn baby, who was receiving vital oxygen support, tragically passed away due to the disruption caused by the Friday, August 25 blackout.

The father expressed his grievance via a social media post on Saturday, August 26, revealing the heart-wrenching impact of the incident on their family.

According to the father, the newborn had issues lactating and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit for infants.

“The oxygen supply was halted since the Embu General Hospital couldn’t run backup generators the whole night. More than three infants in the nursery unfortunately lost their lives,” the aggrieved father, whose details could not be shared in this article, lamented.

“I am sad right now as I head home with a heavy heart. I don’t know what I will tell my wife,” the distraught father added.

Governor Mbarire acknowledged that she was aware of the power disruptions at the hospital.

However, she clarified that one death was reported at the facility rather than five as alleged.

The death recorded in the last 48 hours, she added, was not also linked to the power outage as reported on social media pages.

“There were 20 deliveries among them 8 C/Ss. All the babies are in absolute good health. The hospital has five standby generators which are functional and therefore the country-wide power blackout did not interfere with operations,” she wrote on Facebook.

“The public is therefore advised to ignore and disregard such misleading and alarming posts that are not backed by facts. We invite Boniface Mwangi to come or get in touch with the Department of Health to verify this information.”

The County boss revealed that the hospital had five standby and functional generators, and the nationwide blackout did not interfere with operations as alleged.
