Over 13 goons who attacked Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi in Kisumu on April 8 have fled, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has revealed.

Appearing before the Security Committee in the National Assembly on Tuesday, April 21, Murkomen also confirmed that authorities had initiated a cross-border operation to trace the runaways.

According to the CS, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) circulated images of suspected attackers, and three of them presented themselves to the police, while 13 others escaped the country.

“The DCI circulated some pictures, some of them presented themselves to the police while 14 of them ran out of the country to the neighbouring countries,” he stated.

Murkomen, however, revealed that the Kenyan authorities are working hand in hand with the neighbouring country’s authorities to pursue the attackers and bring them to book, noting that once apprehended, they will serve as an example to others.

“The IG and DCI are on them, working with the authority in the neighbouring country, and we will arrest all of them eventually as soon as they set foot in the country and they will act as example,” he added.

Osotsi was attacked on April 8 while at a joint in Kisumu by a group of youths who disguised themselves as his supporters who wanted to greet him.

What started as a casual conversation turned confrontational, with CCTV cameras capturing the Senator being dragged down with kicks and blows.

He sustained serious injuries before being airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment, where he spent days at Karen Hospital.

Several leaders from across the political divide condemned the attack, with the opposition accusing Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo of orchestrating the attack on the senator.

The opposition gave the PS an ultimatum of 24 hours to resign from his position if the attackers were not identified and arrested by the police.

Hours later, the DCI confirmed the arrest of three suspects linked to the attack, confirming that the suspects all come from the Nyalenda and Manyatta areas of Kisumu County.

The revelation by Murkomen about the goons fleeing Kenya comes at a time when the use of goons, especially by politicians, has become a norm in recent times, causing chaos and disruptions at political gatherings and also attacking political opponents.
