Government increases benefits for select SHA treatments after uproar

Health CS Deborah Barasa has announced increased benefit packages for cancer and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) treatments covered by the Social Health Authority (SHA).

Speaking during a multi-government forum on Monday, February 17, the CS revealed that the SHA cover for ICU had been increased from Ksh4,480 to Ksh28,000 per day.

Additionally, the benefit coverage for oncology services – treatment of cancer – has been increased by Ksh150,000.

”Equally for oncology services, we are happy to report that previously we were at Ksh400,000, and following concerns from the public, we have been able to increase the same to Ksh550,000

“This is an additional increase of Ksh150,000 for the oncology cases,” she stated.

The CS detailed that the changes were aimed at ensuring that Kenyans enjoy better health coverage under SHA adding that the changes were effected following the proposal made in the supplementary budget.

She added that the government was also working on reviewing the overseas treatment package which has seen Kenyans raise concerns in recent weeks.

According to the CS, one could only benefit from the package after approval from the government adding that the cover was Ksh500,000.

“Another concern that has come up from Kenyans is the issue of overseas treatment. The SHIF Act provides for the overseas purchasing of healthcare services that are not available locally,” she highlighted.

“However, this requires accreditation, empanelment, and contracting of providers at overseas facilities, so we continue working on facilitating overseas treatment.”
