“He was cheating,” Arsen Wenger slams Fabinho for his reaction to Alexis’ red card
Arsen Wenger slams Fabinho for his reaction to Alexis’ red card during Champions League last 16 tie against Inter Milan.
The Reds advanced to the quarter-finals after defeating Inter 2-0 in the first leg at the San Siro.
Jurgen Klopp’s side, on the other hand, did not fare as well at Anfield.
After a goalless first half, Lautero Martinez smashed home a powerful attempt from outside the box to put the game out of reach.
Inter was down to ten men barely minutes after scoring.
After a challenge on Fabinho, Alexis Sanchez was issued his marching orders.
The Chilean attacker gained possession of the ball, but his follow through was intercepted by Liverpool’s star player.
Sanchez was then given his marching orders, despite the fact that he had previously received a yellow card.
Arsen Wenger did not agree that a red card should have been given to Sanchez.
Speaking on BeIN Sports, the Frenchman took aim at the referee for ‘killing the game at the wrong moment’.
He then accused Fabinho of ‘cheating’ to get Sanchez sent off. Wenger thought that Fabinho made the most of the challenge in an attempt to get his opponent sent off.
He added: “He was cheating. He made more of it. Maybe he had pain and he was touched. But maybe he could have got up quicker. When it’s one of your players, you say it’s clever. When you are completely neutral, you would say he could have made less of it.”
Wenger did admit, however, that Sanchez should have been sent off for a challenge on Thiago in the first half.
Liverpool will find out their opponents for the last eight when the draw is made on March 18. Joining them in the hat are Bayern Munich, who thrashed Red Bull Salzburg 7-2 on Tuesday evening.
