Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and Meru University of Science and Technology are among 16 learning institutions that have been suspended over nutrition course training standards.
Kenya Nutritionists and Dieticians Institute (KNDI) on Thursday, December 5, suspended 16 institutions from offering nutrition and dietetics courses due to non-compliance with training standards.
The 16 institutions were barred from offering courses ranging from degree and diploma to certificate courses in their curricula.
Among the top universities named were Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Karatina University, Kenya Methodist University (KeMU), and Lukenya University.
Similarly, colleges affected include the Kenya Institute of Development Studies, Jodan College of Technology, JFC Munene College of Health Sciences, the Kenya School for Integrated Medicine, and Laisamis Technical and Vocational College.
Others barred are Thika School of Medical and Health Sciences, Meru National Polytechnic, Northeastern National Polytechnic and Sang’alo National Polytechnic.
KNDI also shut down nutrition and dietetics programmes at Meru University (degree level) and Edinburgh College (certificate and diploma levels).
In the same breadth, Jordan Hospital Medical College and Kenya Institute of Social Work and Development saw their certificate and diploma courses discontinued.
In a notice, KNDI cited non-compliance with professional training requirements outlined in Section 6(d) of Cap 253B mandate as the main reason for the suspension.

The suspension reflects KNDI’s commitment to ensuring that educational programs in nutrition and dietetics meet the necessary quality benchmarks required for professional practice in the country.
The Dieticians Institute at the same time confirmed that 73 institutions were approved to offer nutrition and dietetics courses.
Among them, are Maseno University, University of Nairobi (UoN), Kisii University, Kenyatta University, and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST).
Additionally, Mount Kenya University (MKU), Great Lakes University of Kisumu, Egerton University, Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT), and Chuka University were approved to offer nutrition and dietetics courses.
In the notice, KNDI asked parents and guardians to conduct due diligence on the accreditation status of institutions before enrolling their students.
