The family of Jowie Irungu to appeal the death sentence in the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani
The family of Jowie Irungu to appeal the death sentence in the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani.
The family of Joseph Irungu, also known as Jowie, has taken issue with the decision that sentenced their son to death for the 2018 murder of Monica Kimani.
Speaking Wednesday, March 13, outside the courtroom, Irungu’s mother criticized the decision, stating that her son was wrongly condemned and was innocent.
The family promised to appeal High Court Judge Grace Nzioka’s decision at the Court of Appeal.
The mother exuded confidence that justice would eventually be served, and her son insisted that Jowie was innocent of Monica’s murder.
“I believe my son is innocent. He has not done any wrong and has not killed anyone. I believe there is a God of a second chance,” the mother said.

The Jowie legal team accused the judge of making a ruling to please members of the public.
“We affirm in our belief that during all this process, the hon judge was playing to the gallery. We are adamant in our belief that the judgement delivered in the court is completely and substantially different from the written judgement,” the lawyer claimed.
The lawyers accused the judge of using wrong circumstantial evidence to convict their client, whom they insist is innocent.
“The judge built a mountain out of the clothes that Jowie wore, especially those round kaki shorts; those are the only things she had that could link Jowie to do death of Monica Kimani because there were drops of blood. But the shorts brought in court were different from what Jowie wore,” they added.
