Kante man of the match but Thiago Silva produced world-class display in the Champions League tie

Thiago Silva produced a world-class display in the Champions League tie against Lille, proving why he is one of the best.

Thiago Silva, a Chelsea defender, had a brilliant defensive effort in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Lille in the Champions League round of 16 first leg.

Since his arrival in 2020, the Brazil international has been one of the Blues’ most reliable defenders. Against the French champions, he put on another world-class performance.

Lille was down 1-0 after only eight minutes, when Kai Havertz headed home from a corner. They attempted to equalize but were unable to find the back of the net.

Soon after the hour mark, Christian Pulisic made it 2-0, and the score remained unchanged. At the heart of Chelsea’s defense, Silva was once again crucial.

The 37-year-old has shown no signs of slowing down, and he was at the top of his game with seven clearances last night. He also won six aerial and ground duels.

In the first half, the center-back also blocked two shots and made a crucial interception when Zeki Celik could have given Jonathan David a simple tap-in.

Kante was voted man of the match for his outstanding all-around performance, but Silva was also deserving of the accolade for suffocating Lille’s offense, which managed only two shots on target.

Chelsea’s fortunes were mixed in December, with victories proving difficult to come by. They have recently regained momentum, with six consecutive victories in all competitions.

Their attacking performances have been inconsistent, with clear-cut chances going begging, but the backline has been rock strong, with Silva at the center of it all.

The Brazilian has demonstrated extraordinary fitness for his age by playing every minute of the last four games. On Sunday, he will play a crucial part in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool.

For the sixth time in their history, the west London giants are attempting to win the Cup competition.

In 2015, they defeated Tottenham Hotspur to win the trophy (2-0 win).
