Family heartbroken after KCSE candidate dies days before completing exams at Ogande Girls High School.

One family in Kisii County is engulfed in grief after their daughter, a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidate, died days away from finishing her exams at Ogande Girls High School in Homa Bay.

The 18-year-old Beryl Nyaboke had written most of her KCSE papers before she reportedly fell sick and mysteriously died.

The student developed complications which saw her rushed to Homa Bay Hospital for treatment. The grandmother of the student visited her at the hospital only to find the student in bed and unconscious.

“I left home and went to Homa Bay Hospital. I found our student in bed not talking sleep in bed,” the grandmother said in an interview with Citizen TV.

On her part, the mother was informed of her daughter’s complications noting that she did expect it to become serious.

“I was told she was not feeling well. So to the point of my daughter’s demise, I don’t know what happened, and what I want as a parent is to know is before she became unconscious what happened?” the mother stated tears welling in her eyes.

Hospital records indicated that the student succumbed to severe Malaria. On November 11, the family received devastating news in the wee hours. The death has since left the family disheartened and heartbroken.

Now the family is calling on security agencies to intervene and unravel the mystery surrounding the death of their kin whom they believed died due to the school’s negligence.

The family insisted that their daughter was in perfect health when she left home and are pointing a finger of blame at the school for negligence. The school, however, denied any wrongdoing.

Ogande Girls High School Principal Jeniffer Otolo said that the matter was being handled at the Homa Bay County Education office.

“We presented to them a student who was doing exams. We want them to explain why they are returning to us a basin and his body. They are supposed to, at least, explain what happened?” another member of the family demanded.

The body of the student was transferred to the Nyangena Hospital morgue in Kisii as the family continues to seek answers to the death of their kin.
