The Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) has announced the appointment of Waqo Ejersa as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
Ejersa who has over 25 years of experience in medical practice and policy development will be taking over from Andrew Mulwa.
The appointee’s career has been marked by significant contributions to healthcare management systems both nationally and internationally.
According to his LinkedIn profile, he has been instrumental in improving healthcare services through capacity building and enhancing healthcare funding.
The appointee has held various notable roles, including Head of National Tuberculosis, Leprosy & Lung Diseases in the Ministry of Health, where he led efforts to control and manage these diseases, implementing effective strategies and policies that have significantly impacted public health.
He holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Nairobi and a Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) from the University of Melbourne.
He is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Strategic Planning from The University of Edinburgh.

In his new role as CEO, Ejersa will be tasked with leveraging his experience to enhance KEMSA’s operations, ensuring the efficient procurement and distribution of medical supplies across Kenya.
“Regarding my contribution to Malaria elimination; I have been recognized both locally and internationally for contributing to Malaria elimination programs through policy formulation and enactment as well as developing national health strategic plans and health policy frameworks,” Dr. Ejersa’s CV reads in part.
He will be particularly expected to improve transparency, strengthen supply chain management, and foster partnerships with international and local stakeholders to support the country’s healthcare infrastructure.
In the recent past, KEMSA has been marred with corruption allegations and a sour relationship with county governments over medical supplies.
He will be replacing Andrew Mulwa who has been serving in an acting capacity since March 2023.
