Former Tusker and Kakamega Homeboys defender Gabriel Wandera has been killed in a road accident.

Reports indicate that the footballer lost his life the morning of Sunday, April 19, in a hit-and-run accident.

The accident took place in Busia County, where Wandera was playing his trade with Division 2 side Bossman Knights.

The reports of the sudden demise of Wandera were confirmed by the club, which expressed its sorrow in a heartfelt Facebook post.

“We’ve confirmed our worst fears. Gabby was tragically struck by a car,” stated the club. This is a deeply painful moment for all of us. May Gabby rest in peace.”

Incidentally, Wandera’s death came just hours after he featured in what would be his last match for his team, which lost 3-1 to rivals Khwilare FC.

During that game, the defender was given his marching orders in the 20th minute, reducing his team to 10 men.

Despite this loss, this is not to say that Wandera has not cemented his legacy in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL). He has played in a number of top-tier national football clubs where his impact has been felt at the very least.

Wandera has featured for multiple Kenyan clubs, including Bidco United, Nzoia Sugar FC, and Kakamega Homeboyz, building a career across the Kenyan Premier League and lower divisions over time.

He previously joined Tusker FC in 2019 and later played for several Nairobi-based amateur sides, including Roto Moulders, Tuffrun, KenAfrica, Maveto, and Ruiru Hotstars during different stages of his career.

He signed for Kakamega Homeboyz in 2024 and moved, targeting a transfer during the second leg of the 2024/25 season campaign.

Football fans and rival teams alike have poured in their messages of condolences to Wandera and his family, putting him and his family in thoughts and prayers.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of your player. Our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and your entire team. Go well solder, rest in peace,” stated APS SEAL FC.

A former teammate stated, “It’s so painful. He was my last man number five when I was in Nzoia Fc, RIP soldier!”

This incident comes a few months after the death of Kakamega Homeboyz midfielder Silas Abungana, who passed away after being allegedly attacked following a family dispute.  Abungana died after being attacked by his younger brother, who is said to have stabbed him following a dispute over wife-related issues.
