NMG journalist recounts how late Rita Tinina invited colleagues for lunch days before her death

The late Rita Tinina had shared lunch with some of her colleagues days before she was discovered dead.

Rita Tinina was found dead inside her apartment in Kileleshwa, Nairobi, on Sunday, March 17.

Recounting his last moments with her, the deceased’s colleague at Nation Media Group (NMG) recalled the fun moments she had shared with them at her house on Saturday, March 16.

Melita Tenges, a newscaster at NTV, documented his last but exciting moments with Tinina, from whom he drew counsel on his career line.

They met for lunch on Thursday, March 13, alongside Dancun Khaemba, another colleague of his.

Whilst this might have been their usual lunch outing, it later dawned on Tenges that it was a farewell moment in disguise.

“In retrospect, our conversation wasn’t ordinary; it was Rita imparting her wisdom and wishes for us and the future of journalism. In retrospect, a farewell,” wrote Tenges. After the fun food moments and chit-chats, the trio left for the respective workstations at the Nation Centre. “Rita went back to planning her evening bulletin while Khaemba and I resumed our tasks in the editing suites and called it a day,” Tenges shared.

All was well until three days later when Tinina did not turn up at her workplace.

Efforts to reach her proved futile as phone calls went unanswered, raising tension and anxiety among colleagues.

The frantic phone calls by Tinina’s concerned colleagues would later be quelled by the sad news of her passing.
