Man Utd target summer transfer deal for 26-goal contributing star Cody Gakpo
Cody Gakpo is an Eindhoven star with a 26-goal contribution this season, with Manchester United targeting the player in the summer.
According to The Mirror, Manchester United are keeping tabs on the performances of PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo ahead of a summer approach.
The Red Devils bolstered their attack with the big-money signing of Jadon Sancho last summer while Cristiano Ronaldo made a surprise return after 12 seasons away.
After a difficult first half to the campaign, Sancho has started to find his feet in recent weeks.
Ronaldo has also delivered with 15 goals, but he is no longer in his prime.
It is now reported that United have their sights on pursuing Gakpo, who has bagged a stunning tally of 13 goals and 13 assists from 33 appearances for PSV this term.
Gakpo has largely operated from the left wing, but is capable of playing in a central role.
Ralf Rangnick is said to have recommended him to the United hierarchy.
United will have to spend on a marquee striker this summer. Ronaldo has endured a tough start to the New Year. He has netted just once in his last 10 appearances in all competitions.
Meanwhile, Edinson Cavani has not been able to provide any support, having spent much of the time on the sidelines with a groin problem. It is unclear when he will return.
Cavani is expected to leave when his contract expires this summer. Elsewhere, Mason Greenwood is suspended while Anthony Martial could push for a permanent exit after his Sevilla loan stint.
Marcus Rashford is currently an option to play upfront, but it is quite clear that the England international tends to fare best when operating from the left side of the attack.
Gakpo has excelled at PSV with nearly three take-ons, three key passes and three shots per game, but he may not be a solution for the Red Devils upfront with his preference to play out wide.
The £19.8 million-rated star would be a quality addition to the squad with the anticipated exit of Jesse Lingard, but United still need to pursue a tried-and-tested striker with assured goals.
