The Met Department urged the public to stay alert over the heavy rains and take necessary precautions.

The Kenya Meteorological Department announced that the long rain season has officially began in some parts of the country.

In a weather forecast on Monday, March 17, the Met Department noted that heavy downpour is expected in the Highlands East and West of Rift which includes Nairobi, the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Southeastern Lowlands, and Northeastern Kenya.

The weatherman urged members of the public to be alert over the heavy rains and take necessary precautions.

“Rainfall continues in several parts of the country. Isolated heavy downpours expected in, Highlands East & West of Rift (incl. Nairobi), Lake Victoria Basin & Rift Valley and Southeastern Lowlands & Northeastern Kenya.

“Residents in these areas should remain alert for heavy rainfall & take necessary precautions,” the forecast reads in part.

At the same time, the Met Department announced that the Northeastern Kenya region is expected to receive rainfall until March 31, 2025 however the rains may be followed by dry spells.

In the Northwestern Kenya and Coastal Regions, the weatherman noted that they will experience occasional rainfall in the remaining part of the month but the rainy season is expected to properly begin in April.

“Northeastern Kenya: Expected this week & next (18–31 March), but may be followed by dry spells. Northwestern Kenya & Coastal Regions: Occasional rainfall in March, but onset likely in April (peak for Coast in May),” the Met Department added.
