Mike Sonko Joins Ruto
Mike Sonko Joins Ruto, just a day after announcing plans to ditch Azimio la Umoja One coalition led by Raila Odinga.
Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has officially joined Deputy President William Ruto’s camp after ditching the Azimio coalition.
The Deputy President in a message on Saturday broke the news welcoming Sonko to the Kenya Kwanza team.
“We welcome Mike Sonko to Kenya Kwanza, the winning team,” Ruto wrote on Facebook.
The move was announced on Saturday, July 30, by
Deputy President William Ruto shared photos of him and Sonko at a private meeting held at DP’s Karen residence.
It is not yet clear whether Sonko has decamped from Wiper and which Party he will be fronting under Kenya Kwanza.
The former governor was a member of Kalonzo’s Wiper party under the Azimio coalition.
He was vying for Mombasa gubernatorial seat but his bid has been unsuccessful after the Supreme court decision barred him from vying, owing to his impeachment as Nairobi governor.
Sonko had earlier threatened to back Hassan Omar, a UDA candidate for governor of Mombasa County, against Abdulswamad Nassir, a candidate for Azimio la Umoja.
Sonko had denied considering joining the DP William Ruto-led party in an exclusive interview with KTN News, but he cautioned that if he were put in a tight spot, he may consider it.
“It’s not about Sonko. Clear Ali Mbogo and let him be on the ballot, failure to which we shall support Hassan Omar. Take this to the bank,” said Sonko. “I am not in UDA, but maybe they will force us to that decision. Don’t punish everybody because of my mistakes.”
Sonko added that he wants the Supreme Court to review its judgment that affirmed his impeachment.
