No one is going to stop me from talking to Rigathi Gachagua - MP Mohammed Ali

Nyali MP Mohammed Ali has addressed his association with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua following claims by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party Secretary General Omar Hassan allegedly attempting to link him with the embattled ex-deputy president.

Speaking on Monday, April 14, Ali dismissed the narrative being driven by the SG, suggesting that his personal connections should not be construed as betrayal.

“What the Secretary General of the party is trying to do is to link me with the former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua. There is no harm in having a friend; Gachagua was part and parcel of our team and he campaigned for UDA,” he said.

Ali went ahead to highlight Gachagua’s role in the party’s past success and reaffirmed his right to engage with the former DP on a personal level.

“He was our deputy president but he was impeached and he’s out there continuing with his politics. There is no one who is going to stop me from talking to him; there is no one who is going to stop me from having a cup of tea with him,” he added.

Notably, Ali was among a handful of MPs who distanced themselves from Gachagua’s impeachment.

In a statement in October 2024, the MP stated that he did not support the process, claiming that it was ill-intentioned.

“I have carefully read the charges in the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. In good faith, I do not support this cause of action and find it ill-intentioned seeking to demonize a public servant who has contributed immensely to this great country.

“Let it be known that I, Mohamed Ali Mohamed, did not sign the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua,” he said at the time.

More recently, Ali withdrew from the UDA grassroots elections in Mombasa, citing manipulation and interference by top party leadership.

In a statement on Thursday, April 10, the MP accused the UDA Secretary General of interference and handpicking of officials which he claimed undermines the democratic process within the party.

“As we embark on this year’s journey, I hope this pertinent message finds each of you energized and ready for the challenges ahead. First things first, I must address a matter of significant concern that requires our immediate attention.

“It has become unequivocally clear that the upcoming Mombasa’s grassroots elections have been compromised and hence, it is quite unfortunate that #TeamMohamedAli will not be taking any part in them,” he said.

Ali expressed concern over what he termed as a profound conflict of interest, accusing the SG of prioritizing his personal interests over the will of the people.

“The SG’s blatant interference, his evident handpicking of officials to manipulate the outcome, represents nothing but a profound conflict of interest.

“His tendency to micromanage the party, prioritizing his personal political interests over the will of the people, is not only unacceptable but a grave disservice to the citizens of Mombasa,” he added.
