ODM Disputes Tribunal removes Edwin Sifuna as Secretary General
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has removed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna from his position as the party’s Secretary General following a resolution by its National Executive Committee (NEC).
The decision was reached during a NEC meeting held on Monday, June 22, at Chungwa House and chaired by ODM National Chairperson, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga in the presence of party leader Oburu Odinga.
According to the party, the NEC considered a report from the Internal Disputes Resolution Committee (IDRC), which had been tasked with investigating a complaint against Senator Edwin Sifuna in his capacity as Secretary General.
After reviewing the committee’s findings, the NEC unanimously adopted its recommendations and endorsed Sifuna’s removal from office.
“After going through the report and the findings of the IDRS under article 74 section 2 of the party constitution, the NEC unanimously adopted the committee’s recommendation and endorsed the removal from office of Senator Edwin Watenya Sifuna. Effectively, Senator Sifuna ceases to be the Secretary General of the ODM party,” acting Secretary General Catherine Omanyo said in an official statement.
While justifying the decision, the party cited remarks made by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, which emphasised the importance of internal party discipline.
“The day any official of a party becomes above the law, so to speak, will be the day of the funeral of political party democracy in Kenya. If such a situation were to occur as a matter of fact, this tribunal would never sanction the same by law, for such would be an affront to the law,” the tribunal stated.

Further, the ODM NEC reiterated that Sifuna was handed numerous opportunities to respond to a raft of allegations tabled against him, but the Senator reportedly responded through his lawyers instead.
The decision came barely a week after the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal ruled that Senator Sifuna was not accorded a fair hearing before his initial ouster.
Last week, the tribunal held that there was no evidence that Sifuna had been notified that his conduct would be discussed during the earlier NEC meeting.
The tribunal also clarified that its ruling does not prevent ODM from taking disciplinary action against Sifuna in future, provided any fresh proceedings are conducted in accordance with the law, the party constitution and its internal rules.
