“ODM does not exist… it is now a lemon” – Babu Owino

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has hinted at the formation of a new political party and a new political outfit under the ‘Linda Mwananchi’ movement, signaling a potential shift in Kenya’s political landscape ahead of 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an interview on Monday May 4, 2026, Babu revealed that Kenyans should expect a new political party, complete with a fresh identity and leadership direction.

The MP, who has been a member of the Orange Democratic Movement, appeared to distance himself from the party, claiming it no longer reflects its original identity.

“ODM does not exist. What we have now is a lemon: not an orange anymore. It is LDM.”

Babu also declared his intention to vie for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat, making it clear he will do so through a political party and not as an independent candidate.

“I will be vying for the Nairobi governor seat, and I will not run as an independent candidate.”

While stating that his immediate focus remains on Nairobi politics, Babu hinted at broader national ambitions under the Linda Mwananchi movement.

“The voice of the people is the voice of God.”

When pressed on whether public pressure could push him toward a presidential bid, he responded cautiously but left the door open.

“As of now, I am focused on Nairobi. But come 2032 zoea rais wako.”

He further outlined what appears to be a long-term political succession plan within the movement.

“Whoever we choose under Linda Mwananchi will serve one term, then make way for me to serve two terms.”

In a statement likely to stir political debate, Babu referenced his past alignment with opposition leader Raila Amollo Odinga while positioning himself as a future leader.

“My last boss was Raila Amollo Odinga. The next step is to be the boss, the one who will serve the people.” He emphasized that efforts are already underway to front a presidential candidate under the new movement, one who would lead before his anticipated bid.
