Raila Expected To Unveil His Running Mate At Kamukuji Rally Ahead of Monday, May 16 deadline set by the IEBC.
Raila Odinga, the leader of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition, is set to reveal his running mate during his rally in Nairobi’s Kamukunji Grounds on Sunday.
Raila’s close associates have indicated that the ODM leader will use the platform to name his deputy.
Raila Odinga, according to his close associates, will use the rally on Sunday to convey part of his plan as well as present the Azimio national line-up.
This will involve the announcement of a running mate before the general election on August 9th.
Martha Karua appears to be the favorite in the race for the running mate position.
On Saturday at a political rally in Mombasa Karua said she will support any candidate that the ODM leader will settle on.
Raila Expected To Unveil His Running Mate
Nderitu Muriithi, Governor of Laikipia and Chairman of Mr Odinga’s presidential campaign board, believes the Kamukunji event is significant and will set the tone for the presidential contest and the start of Azimio’s countrywide campaigning.
“It is possible (that Mr Odinga could unveil his running mate at the rally). It is not something that we have discussed but because he has since received the names it is something he can consider,” Nderitu said.
“We are looking forward to it because it is a significant rally and the beginning of our formal campaigns. We are increasingly unveiling our manifesto and we can expect more of that on Sunday. You will see a galaxy of Azimio leaders also being unveiled.” he added.
Raila is expected to pick between Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua and former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth.
The Kalonzo Musyoka camp is, however, asking the ODM leader to name the former vice president as his running mate or he quits the coalition and ran for the top seat as an independent candidate.
