Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga arrives in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for the launch of his African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship bid on November 6, 2024.

Former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for the official launch of his African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship bid.

Raila arrived in Ethiopia on Wednesday evening.

During his stay in Ethiopia, he is expected to hold key meetings with various diplomats from across the continent as he ramps up his hunt for the African Union Commission chairperson position.

The meeting will serve as Raila’s official continental campaign launch after President William Ruto unveiled him as the country’s sole candidate for the AUC job.

“The Addis event is a follow-up to the 27th August 2024 official reception of the candidature of Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga in Nairobi is meant to provide a platform for the candidate to engage with core players, formations and partners of the AU. The candidate will use the forum to outline his pan-African vision and priorities in line with AU Agenda 2063.

“The candidate will crown the activities with a keynote address at the Grand Campaign Reception to be held at the AU Multipurpose Hall on the evening of November 8, 2024,” a statement from his campaign secretariat said.

The event will bring together representatives from AU Member States, Regional Economic Communities, business leaders, youth and women’s groups, and civil society organisations.

The presentation, scheduled for 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the AU Multipurpose Hall, will be a watershed moment in Odinga’s campaign for continental leadership.

His platform emphasises a pan-African approach to achieving a prosperous and self-sufficient Africa.

His top priorities are economic transformation, increased intra-African trade, infrastructure development, financial independence, gender equity, agricultural transformation, climate action, youth empowerment, digital transformation, and maintaining continental peace and security.

His vision also promotes collaborative growth, demonstrating his long-standing commitment to African unity and integration.

The former ODM party leader will also hold a media luncheon at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Addis Ababa on Saturday, November 9, at 12:30 p.m.

This session aims to provide additional insights into his agenda and implementation plans, as well as an opportunity for media representatives to speak with the candidate directly about his proposed strategies.
