Raila names his likely successor in politics
2 min readRaila Odinga names leaders likely to succeed him in the event he retires from politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
A seasoned politician, Raila Odinga’s ambitions to “liberate” Kenyans from the social, political, and economic difficulties they face have been hampered by his five electoral defeats.
The definition of resiliency, self-redefinition, and optimism is his political journey.
And the time has come for the former premier to pass the torch of leadership and the presidential campaign to someone else—who need not be a member of his community.
The Azimio leader has talked about his political future and the subsequent succession plan when he retires.
The ODM leader stated that he will pass the torch to others at the appropriate time but did not specify when.
Speaking to Daily Nation, Raila, who is currently 78 years old, refuted the idea that he has reached retirement age and should retire claiming he is still extremely strong and can continue.
“It is not a question of age. I am very strong and I can continue, but I am ready to hand over to others when the time comes,” said Raila.

Raila’s possible successors
The former premier also revealed the names of potential successors to him after his retirement.
He mentioned the staunch and devoted Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
The former vice president, who is 69 years old right now, has made suggestions that he would run for president in 2027.
Martha Karua, who he characterized as very principled and steadfast, was also mentioned by Raila.
In the 2022 presidential election, Raila’s running mate was the 65-year-old.
Additionally, Wycliffe Oparanya, a former governor of Kakamega, was suggested as Raila’s prospective successor.
He also named former Mombasa governor Hassan Joho and Jeremiah Kioni as other potentials.
However, Hassan Joho has not been active in the political scene since Raila lost the presidency to President William Ruto.
As for Kioni, he has been vocal and repetitively insisting that Raila won the presidency but was rigged out.
“We are not lacking in terms of succession material. I am not retiring as yet by demand of the people, and I can not abandon the cause when the situation is looking so gloomy,” Raila added.
