Raila summons ODM meeting amid internal leadership disputes

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party leader, Raila Odinga, has called for a crucial meeting with party members

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party leader, Raila Odinga, has called for a crucial meeting with party members scheduled for Friday, August 9.

According to reports, the meeting which has been shrouded in some secrecy, comes at a time when the party is grappling with internal leadership disputes and broader strategic concerns.

A source within ODM revealed that Friday’s meeting is just the beginning of a series of discussions aimed at resolving these ongoing issues.

“Yes, there is a meeting tomorrow, but we cannot disclose the agenda of the meeting yet. There are so many meetings that will happen. You know Baba [Raila Odinga] is exiting to go to AU, so they will be need for ODM and Azimio,” the source stated, hinting at Raila’s expected departure to assume a role at the African Union.

The Central Management Committee of ODM is set to focus on addressing the increasing tensions within the party’s leadership ranks.

The tensions have been exacerbated by recent political developments, including President William Ruto’s appointment of senior ODM members to cabinet positions after their successful vetting by the National Assembly.

The departure of key figures like Ali Hassan Joho and Wycliffe Oparanya from their roles as deputy party leaders has left a power vacuum within ODM, leading to fierce competition among members vying for these influential positions.

The battle for leadership has grown particularly intense between former nominated MP and ODM National Chairman John Mbadi and the immediate former Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi, both of whom are reportedly seeking Raila’s endorsement for the coveted deputy leader roles.

As the party navigates these turbulent waters, the upcoming meetings will likely be pivotal in shaping the future direction of ODM, especially as Odinga prepares to step back from active party leadership to focus on his new role at the AU.

The outcomes of these discussions will have significant implications not only for the party’s internal stability but also for its position within the broader Azimio la Umoja coalition.

To fill some House positions, the opposition unanimously endorsed Junet Mohamed and Millie Odhiambo as the new Minority Leader and Whip in the National Assembly, respectively.

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna confirmed the decision on X, thanking Azimio constituent parties for their support and wishing the new leaders well.
