Ex-former Chief of Defence Forces Julius Karangi, and Dr. Sally Kosgei among others in the list of new appointments by President Ruto.

President William Ruto has appointed former Chief of Defence Forces Julius Karangi as the Chancellor of the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology.

The President announced in a gazette notice dated October 27, 2023, that Karangi will take up his new position effective November 1 and serve for a duration of five years.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 38 (1) (a) of the Universities Act, 2012, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint – Julius Waweru Karangi (RTD.) GEN. to be the Chancellor of the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, for a period of five (5) years, with effect from the 1st November 2023,” read the notice.

Karangi chaired the board of the National Council for Population and Development (NCPD) from 2022 till his appointment. 

His tenure as KDF chief spanned from 2011 till his retirement in 2015.

Additionally, Dr. Sally Kosgei, a former agriculture minister and Aldai MP, was reappointed by President Ruto to the position of Chancellor of Taita Taveta University.

Kosgei was a one-time MP from 2007 up to 2013.

Other appointees included Prof. Paul Musili Wambua as University of Embu Chancellor and Dr. Fred Ojiambo who was appointed as Kirinyaga University Chancellor, both for the same period of five years.

In other appointments, Ruto named former Cherangany Member of Parliament Joshua Kutuny as the Chairperson of the Kenya Copyright Board.

During the 2022 electioneering period, the legislator was one of the few politicians from the Rift Valley region who campaigned for Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga.

However, he was among the members who faced expulsion from the Jubilee party over his dalliance with the Kenya Kwanza government

Kutuny joined a list of Jubilee party members who pledged loyalty to President Ruto.
