MET department issues warning alert to 16 counties over heavy rains
2 min readHeavy rains expected in at least 16 counties from the 26th of October, 2023 according to a new warning alert by the Kenya Met Department.
In a statement on FridayThursday Kenya Meteorological Department listed 16 counties likely to be affected by heavy rains.
The counties affected by the alert are Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Embu, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Murang’a, Meru, Kirinyaga, Tharaka Nithi, Kwale, and Mombasa.
“The rainfall being experienced over parts of the country is expected to spread and intensify from Friday 27th of October, 2023 over the Northeastern and central parts of the country,” Met said in a letter dated Thursday, October 26.
“From Saturday 28th October, it is likely to spread to several parts of Northeastern, the Central Highlands and the South Coast. These rains are likely to be accompanied by gusty winds.”

It is recommended that residents in all of the aforementioned locations keep an eye out for possible flooding.
According to Kenya Met, floodwaters could show up in areas without much rain, particularly downstream.
“Residents are advised to avoid driving through, or walking in moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows when raining to minimize exposure to lightning strikes,” Kenya Met said.
“The strong winds may blow off roofs, uproot trees, and cause structural damages. Updates will be provided promptly if there are any changes.”
