Ruto extends Ex-Chief Justice David Maraga's term as he adds him more powers at the police reforms task force

Ruto extends Ex-Chief Justice David Maraga’s term as he adds him more powers at the police reforms task force.

The Police Reforms Taskforce, which is chaired by former Chief Justice David Maraga, had its tenure extended by two months by President William Ruto on Friday, March 3.

Ruto said that the extension was intended to give the team enough time to also evaluate the terms of service for NYS officers while addressing in Gilgil during the pass-out procession of the National Youth Service (NYS) officers.

The noble role that NYS officers play across the nation, he said, made the step imperative.

The Maraga-led panel was tasked with reviewing the officers’ pay and employment conditions, just like other security organizations.

“This morning, I have instructed an extension of two months to be accorded to the taskforce so that they can also include the National Youth Service (NYS) to ensure that they join the other services in the review

“This will ensure that they are included in the term of service. I look forward to that report,” announced the Head of State.

He also emphasized how important it was to his administration to improve the housing options for security agencies.

The National Police Service (NPS) and prison wardens’ terms of service were initially to be reviewed by the Maraga-led taskforce.

The former Chief Justice was one of 20 people chosen on December 22, 2022, to examine the officer terms of service and offer recommendations.

Maraga’s team was given 90 days to finish the mandate and submit their final report by the end of March 2023.

“The term of the task force is a period of 90 days with the effect from the date of this notice. The Secretariat of the task force shall be at the Ministry of Interior and National administration,” read the notice in part then.

With the extension, the term of the Maraga-led taskforce will end in May 2023.
