Ruto on Thursday, March 30, revealed details of his conversation with US President Joe Biden.

President William Ruto held an online meeting with the American President while he was on his tour to Germany and Belgium in Europe.

The Head of State stated that President Biden also extended an invitation to him to attend a conference of democracies intended to combat the rise of authoritarianism.

“In the meeting, I assured President Biden of my commitment to strengthening democracy in Kenya,” Ruto explained.

Also, Ruto urged President Biden to make sure that his foreign policy upholds the fundamental principles of democracy and social responsibility.

We must make sure that democracy is safeguarded and that those who violate its principles be put an end to, insisted Ruto.

Ruto told President Biden that democracy is crucial in creating opportunities for the country, especially, in attracting foreign investments.

This comes after on Tuesday, March 28, the US government voiced its concerns about the ongoing Azimio protests in Kenya.

Through State Department Spokesman Vedant Patel, Biden warned both the Kenya Kwanza government and the opposition that Kenya risks sliding into anarchy should the participants continue with violent engagements.

“We encourage political leaders, protesters, and all parties to refrain from violence and rhetoric that could incite violence,” State Department spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters.

The US warned Kenyan authorities against violating human rights while dealing with opposition protests and asked them to use moderation.

The State Department added that the Raila-led opposition was fully within its rights to demonstrate, citing this as one of democracy’s most important characteristics.

“We call on government security forces to act with restraint while protecting public safety and property.

“The rights to freedoms of expression and association and the right to peaceful assembly are core tenets to democracy,” Vedant Patel explained.
