Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua now claims the police were well aware of plans to cause chaos at a funeral in Limuru on Thursday.
Speaking on NTV, the former Deputy President said it was baffling that there was no a single police officer in uniform at the funeral, yet thousands were expected at the ceremony.
He, however, alleged that there were plainclothes officers at the event who watched as goons attacked mourners.
“This is a small area and the people know the area police officers. They saw them there at the funeral, but they did nothing to stop the violence,” he said.
Gachagua added that the family of the deceased had even requested for four uniformed police officers, knowing there would be a huge attendance.
The ex-DP further claimed that the police had been informed about the plans.
“Every speaker was calling for peace and asking those who had been sent to disrupt the meeting not to do it,” Gachagua added.
According to Gachagua, the Kiambu County security team was complicit in the attack, allowing the perpetrators to enter the funeral as early as 8 a.m.
He claimed that senior county security officials met at Tigoni Police Station the day before and decided to provide a “safe corridor” for the attackers.
“The family had requested four uniformed police officers for the event,” Gachagua said. “However, no officers in uniform were present, and those in civilian clothes merely watched as the chaos unfolded.”
He added that the area OCS, initially in uniform, changed into civilian clothes and remained passive during the attack.
The former DP accused Kiambu MP John Kiragu of suspicious behaviour, pointing out that he sat away from the VIP tent and was on his phone for the majority of the event. Gachagua also claimed that the same attackers were later seen escorting the MP to safety after the violence broke out.
“Videos show the attackers escorting the area MP after the incident. You don’t need rocket science to connect the dots,” he remarked.

After the incident on Thursday, Gachagua claimed the government was behind the incident in Limuru where suspected goons attacked mourners.
Gachagua, who had attended the funeral, said a specific group followed him as he went to his car, which they proceeded to attack with stones and iron bars.
“This is a very sad state of affairs and a major low for the State, who were clearly complicit in these actions,” he said.
The former DP said he was driven out of the venue under a hail of stones.
“We will not be scared away from standing with Kenyans who need us to support them in their moments of need. We just expect such a terrible moment of shame will not be repeated,” he added.
Gachagua regretted that the family of the deceased had to run to safety despite their profound grief.”
The former DP recalled that while we were preparing to lay Erastus Nduati to rest, goons attacked them and the other mourners who were present, including children.
He said the goons were armed with stones, machetes, iron bars, and sticks.
