Four people died on the spot on Monday after a 14-seater matatu rammed into a 60-seater bus at the Hill Tea area along the Eldoret-Nakuru highway. 

The accident occurred on Monday, December 18 when a bus collided with a 14-seater. 

According to a police report, the tragic incident occurred at around 5.00 am when the matatu en route to Nakuru collided head-on with the bus full of passengers. 

“Four people lost their lives on Dec 18, 2023, at around 0500hrs, through a tragic road accident involving a Nakuru-bound matatu belonging to Msamaria Shuttle Ltd after the said motor vehicle lost control, colliding head-on with an oncoming 60-seater bus at Hill Tea Area along Eldoret- Nakuru Road.,” NPS statement read in part.

The driver of the matatu, which was carrying 16 people at the time of the accident, died alongside three other passengers.

Nine other passengers who were seriously injured were rushed to Eldama Ravine Sub-County Referral Hospital for treatment.

“The matatu was carrying 16 passengers at the time of the accident which claimed the lives of the driver and three other passengers who died on the spot. Nine other passengers were seriously ill and are currently receiving treatment at Eldama Ravine Sub-County Referral Hospital. The bodies of the deceased were moved to the same facility.” 

Following the accident, the national police service requested motorists to exercise caution while driving especially during this festive and rainy season.

“The National Police Service urges motorists and all other road users to exercise extreme caution while on the roads, especially during this rainy season.”
